Fantasy-Stock Re-Opening

Thu Mar 16, 2017, 12:21 PM

Back to the Roots

:tada: Tada!!:tada: 2 Fantasy-Stock-Group galleries are open again for submissions.  We changed as we've gone back to the roots of the groups main focus. From now on we only accept clear Fantasy, Steampunk and SciFi stock. Our galleries have been streamlined and you should find the correct folder easily.

With that comes a change of rules, like usual. Keep calm and don't panic. :bademoticon:  They are common sense. :nodgiggle:

The Rules

  • PLEASE USE THE CORRECT FOLDER WHEN SUBMITTING!
Due to the Torpedo Thumbnail Grid, it takes extra steps to move deviations and we just don't have the time for that. Therefore wrongly submitted deviations will be declined and you have to resubmit.
  • ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE IN dA's RESOURCES/STOCK GALLERY!
Stock, posted in dA's Photography gallery or in your Scraps will be declined. Also, please follow FAQ #809: What are DeviantArt's stock image guidelines?
  • ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE LEGITIMATE, PREFERABLY YOUR OWN, STOCK.
Google is not a stock site; it's a search engine that does not have the copyright to any of the images shown in their listings.
  • NO COMPLETE SERIES IMAGES
Only up to 3 shots out of any series are accepted, so choose wisely!

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT BY DOWNLOADING AND USING THE OFFERED STOCK, YOU ARE AGREEING TO ABIDE BY THE TERMS OF USE SET BY EACH STOCK PROVIDER!! SO, PLEASE READ THE TOU AND WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK THE PROVIDER FOR CLARIFICATION!

Thoughts, suggestions welcome. :bademoticon:

Submissions closed due to Changes

Wed Feb 15, 2017, 5:29 PM

Hiya fellow stockers,

the group is closing submissions for a little while (probably up to month, maybe longer) as we're going to reorganize the galleries and we can't deal with incoming submissions during that time.

The goal is Back to the Roots - aka we want a more narrow focus on the original themes: Fantasy, SciFi and Steampunk. Now while the latter two are pretty easy to define, Fantasy needs some outlining.... we already put our think caps on Baseball cap , but we love to hear your thoughts. OMG MOAR POEMS!

:gallery: rvmp The galleries will be resorted and general stock that doesn't fit the upcoming definitions for each genre has to go; at least it has to leave the main gallery. Some of it will most probably turn up in the Groups Favourites as we will have a wider selection there. Right now we have way too many folders, so one can get overwhelmed by it and that's a good start for miscats. I hate miscats in my groups, they're evil lil buggers!! :bug: revision Ack a bug

One thing that will change for sure: We will no longer move wrongly submitted deviations.  :deviation: rvmp We just decline them. This is due to the new shiny big thumbnails delivered by deviantart. The new Torpedo Thumbnail Grid requires extra steps in moving deviations and since we all maintain several groups, we just don't have the time for this anymore. It's up to you to submit to the correct category/folder when we re-open.

With that being said, we also call for willing members stepping up to the plate and come aboard as admins helping with handling incoming submissions.  Also, current admins, please tell us (Phyllis or me) per note or in the Admin backroom, if you plan to stay in your position. Please note that you need to fulfill your admin duties if you do so (and yes that means helping with the restructure as well), otherwise we will demote inactive admins. Phyllis and I run several groups together in the founder/co-founder combination and all of our groups run smoothly and require little work once we straighten them out. We usually give full control to co-founders, so the group is not without a founder and can't be run any longer; for that we need trustworthy admins. We have backroom boards to discuss things and all admins have a say and everything said there will be considered. Right now, I have been given Carte Blanche by Phyllis to act as I may see fit. But since she and I did this kind of reorganization   already fourth, fifth times at least together, she knows what she is getting in the end. Obviously I'm the to-go Girl when it comes to restructuring. Looking at your Gallery   Though this time I got myself in this mess :slump:

Thoughts, suggestions welcome. :bademoticon:

The Dedication of Stock Providers:

Stock Providers on DeviantART work to provide free or low cost stock for the community. They put in their own time at their own expense to provide quality stock for use by any Deviant (and often allow offsite use as well). Because of their generosity, time and expense, the very least anyone can do when using the stock is to Read the Rules and to Properly Credit the Stock Provider!

Credit is important. First of all, it shows respect for the stock artist; Secondly, when a Stock Provider is properly credited in the Artist Description at the same time the Deviation is submitted, then the Stock Artist will be notified via mentions. When the stock credits are typed in when editing later, then the mentions will not notify the Stocker.

HOW to Properly Credit the Stock Provider:

Type or copy/paste a Direct Link to the stock used into the Artist Description. Simply putting the stock provider's site name isn't sufficient. Why? Stock isn't always readily recognizable once edited, and it helps the Stock Provider to show others the stock that is available on his/her site. Even when using your own stock, at least put in the Artist Description you're using your own resources. It avoids confusion when submitting to groups that check resource links.

Core Members can use up to six (6) thumbs in the Artist Description; however, it works best to keep the thumbs at FIVE (5) until ALL the stocks and brushes are credited, because, for some reason, DeviantART's code won't allow another thumb to be pasted in order to be converted to a link after six thumbs have been placed into the Artist Description. So, to avoid issues, decide which five to use until all links have been included, then choose the sixth thumb. Also, it is best when using a thumb to provide a text link as well, in case the Core Membership runs out sometime in the future.

Non-Core Members must use links in the Artist Description, since using thumbs is a Core benefit.

Once the Deviation has been posted, notify the Stock Provider as per the Stock Provider's Rules (more about this below*). Rules may require notification in a comment of the stock or brush, via note or profile comment. If multiple stocks are used from a single Stock Provider, it may be okay to notify the Provider via Note explaining which stocks were used. Check the Provider's rules to be sure.

Proper Crediting Example:

Read the Rules:

Since Stock Providers ARE so kind as to provide free or low-cost stock to the community, then the Rules of the Stock Artist should be read and followed. After all, the stock belongs to the Stock Provider. All Stock Artists have a right to create Rules as they see fit, as well as expecting the Rules to be followed.

Stock Providers have a varied way of publishing their Rules, whether the Rules are brief, have some restrictions or are restricted in several ways.

Stock Rules may be posted in a Journal, in a Profile Widget, in the Gallery Folder description or even in the Artist Description of the Stock Deviation.

Examples of Various Ways Rules can be Posted:

WDWParksGal is my name and stock is my game! I have stock on this site, as well as at WDWParksGal-Stock and TheStockWarehouse. I am either a Founder or Co-Founder at the following stock groups:
Fantasy-Stock-Group Stock-For-Premades Joint-Stock WingIt-Stock
Groups that have a stock folder:
Mindspan Holidays DevNews

My stocks are varied: Premade Backgrounds, Tubes and Cut-Outs, Landscapes, Skies, Clouds, Theme Parks, Fairs, Animals, Holidays, Objects and Textures, as well as creating wallpapers that can be used as a stock background, character references, digital scrapbook pages, gradients, banners, group and deviant avatars, tutorials and CSS backgrounds. I've provided stock for the community to use (unrestricted) for many years now. I would be happy to help anyone who would like to get started providing stock either on his/her current site or a new site created just for stock. From offering advice, finding tutorials to share, offering hints on creating different stock types, as well as other help, I'm open for "business". Just send me a note with any questions.

:iconnewsboyplz: Stock Hints and Tips:

:bulletgreen: If a new site is desired just for stock, remember that DeviantART requires a different email account for each DeviantART site, so a new email account may need to be created in order to set-up a new site.
:bulletgreen: Make sure any rules for use of the stock is clearly stated in the artist description and/or a journal and/or a widget on the profile page. Be clear and concise to make sure there isn't any misunderstanding about how the stock can be used. State whether the stock can be used off DA. Remember that once a stock is posted that all the rules in the world may not protect abuse of the stock, hot-linking or reloading the stock on to other sites. If there is concern about how the stock is used, an option is to use a watermark over the preview image then Points :points: can be charged to download the larger, unmarked stock.
:bulletgreen: :camera: Stocks should be clear and not fuzzy or grainy. Be sure to mark the Common License prior to submitting to verify the stock is for use in the community.
:bulletgreen: The minimum size for any stock is 1000 x 1000 pixels. Tube and Clear-Cut PNG stocks are subjected to the same size limit.
:bulletgreen: Rotate Stocks so they are not posted sideways. Also, straighten stocks whenever possible.
:bulletgreen: :police: Google is NOT a stock source! Do not post "celebrity" cut-outs, movie screenshots, official logos or anything else that is protected by a ©/™ (see FAQ below).
:bulletgreen: It is a good idea to have a folder in the favorites just for stock uses. It is a way to give support to the artist using the stock, as well as keeping tracking of what stock is used where and when.

A Few Stock Tutorials and Information:

Some things we should talk aboutThis journal is here to highlight, debug and bust some myths for you all of stuff that goes on ALL the time, and is in part spurred by some recent events that leave me somewhat baffled and perplexed over some of the behavior we've been recently seeing across the DA communities, particularly Stock & Resources, and Photomanip since we work so closely together (and its apparently time I wrote a new wall of text to you all.)
Every community has them.  Those constant "issues" that make people angry and frustrated. Sometimes they can be easily solved with a little effort, and other times something just snaps and causes reactions that are far and away over the top.  Here are some of our top faves.
Its time for everyone to take a nice soothing deep breath, its a long one!
There will be a test at the end. :stare:

How do you keep your gallery organized, concise, and well-representing of you?
:iconsenshistock: SenshiStock says:
There's a few methods which I employ to try to manage the gallery as it gets larger. First, I use a series of folders to help sort poses into categories. There are a lot of folders, and sometimes images fit into more than one folder. For example, I might have a pose where I'm using a sword, but I'm also kneeling. This image would go both in the Sit and Kneel Drawing Poses f

Hy folks
As I am lately back with some manips, I thought its about time
to make a journal with some of my favourite stockers :)
Why they are my favourite? Well they are for several reasons!
Each of those who will be listed here, will have:

:bulletblue: Rules that allow outside dA usage without being forced to slap the stockers name ON the artwork itself.

Stock Copyright - Shutterstock, iStock vs. DAFirst and foremost, I am not a lawyer. This journal contains my personal understanding of copyright law, terms and conditions for the mentioned websites as it relates to the stock and the artistic community here on DeviantArt (DA).
However, please feel free to share this journal.

Recently, one of DA’s most active and respected stock users came under fire for using off site (meaning outside DA) stocks in her work. As a “stocker”, I was surprised to hear of this - It was my understanding that this was common practice for artists to do.
It prompted me to look into the matter and dust off the little bit of arts law I studied whilst doing my post grad in Arts Management. (And I will save you the definition of IP law and the fact that copyright stays in effect for about 150 years, give or take a few. If you want to read a bit more about the basics in easy to und

Hy folks,
before I started doing my own art, I was an avid incredimail email- stationary creator.
(All legal always with freeware, according to terms, with written permission etc)
For that reason I have collected a massive bunch of pages with stockphotos (free for profit reasons)
free & shareware fonts, plugin pages and so on.
I thought that it might be as useful for creating art for some of you.
The quality and resolution of the images varies so check yourself :)
